Cambodian National Assembly President to Attend Global Female Speakers Summit in France

Phnom Penh: Khoun Sudary, President of the Cambodian National Assembly, is set to lead a distinguished delegation on an official visit to France from March 2 to 11, 2024. The visit, which comes at the invitation of Yaël Braun-Privet, President of the French National Assembly, will include participation in a summit of the world's first female speakers of parliament.

The General Secretariat of the Cambodian National Assembly announced that this summit aims to enhance parliamentary diplomacy with a focus on issues affecting women and girls. It seeks to promote the rights of women worldwide, encourage women’s participation in political careers, combat all forms of violence against women, and underscore the critical role of parliaments in advancing gender equality through legislative proposals and enactments.

The summit will feature discussions across two main roundtable forums. The first will address equity in education, violence against women, and women’s health, while the second will focus on gender equality in the political sector and the establishment of women as role models.

During their visit, the Cambodian delegation plans to engage with French counterparts, participate in an exhibition showcasing the political rights of women globally, and conduct meetings with the Presidents of the National Assemblies from Indonesia, Germany, and Belgium. Additionally, meetings are arranged with the general delegate of the Parliamentary Assembly of La Francophonie (APF), the Cambodia-France Parliamentary Friendship Group, the Social Affairs Committee of the French National Assembly, and the Secretary-General of the French National Assembly.

This visit is anticipated to significantly contribute to fostering warm bilateral relations between the legislative bodies and peoples of Cambodia and France. It also represents a valuable opportunity for Cambodia to strengthen its parliamentary diplomacy on a global scale, particularly in promoting gender equality and the principles of multilateralism to ensure peace, social stability, prosperity, sustainability, and inclusiveness.
